since i was acquainted with Bengali literature, i always heard the name of SARATCHANDRA CHATTERJEE, a very famous novelist in bengali novels. i have heard from my mother and teachers, how they loved those novels and shed bucket-full tears by sympathising with suffering female character of the novel. SARATCHANDRA CHATTERJEE was and is very famous for potraying the poor and downtrodden, especially the condition of the poor village women. he knew the art of reading a woman's heart..........a quality which is very rare. at least i never successfully realised a woman's feelings. and young ladies were able to find the potrayal of their lives in those characters, and used to shed tears. SARATCHANDRA CHATTERJEE did not write to make them cry, but it was the sheer genius of that man, which compelled the reader to take those fictions as realities.
i possess the habit of writing short stories. i have right a few....my girlfriend was the first one to inspire and the harshest critic too. when i started coming online i used to sent those short stories to many of my online friends and sought their response. in general they have appreciated, while so of them have found many faults. but i used to wander about saratchandra chatterjee.......and thought what the genius that man had that he even make somebody cry through his simple storyline.
when i was in school, i had the privilage to be part of a famous tagore lyric-play......"valmiki pratibha". i was one of those silly singers in the bunch....with my tender adolescent voice. it was one of the first adventures of tagore in his literary journey. it was about the transformation of a ferocious bandit valmiki, to a famous author of ramayana. in this short play.....there was a character of a sweet little girl who with her courage and innocence helped valmiki to transform. one of our junior girl from the school, was selected to play that role. she used to dance on the stage beside the false trees, and bushes........and used to mesmerize abhrajit ganguly....the great valmiki. i was surprised by the enthusiasm of that girl.......and also about the famous character of the play who had the courage to transform valmiki to an author. that sweet little girl performed so well, that still people who were somehow part of that play...still talk about her and amalgamate her with that character.........she has immortalized that character in our heart.
many years later, even after leading my school, when i found her in orkut, the first thing i told her....."hey u were that little girl in valmiki prathiba....am i right?" and that sweet girl replied...."oho...u too!! yes i am.......".
then we started talking throug online and came to know about varoius secrets of her life.....and got more convinced that this girl really possess a lion heart, that she has overcome all the difficulties of her personal life. i was more convinced that our arindrajit sir somehow even indirectly choose the right person to transform a bandit to an author.
one day a gifted one of my poor short stories to this girl and requested her to read that and tell me her opinion. she agreed and i gifted her that famous short story of mine which i gifted to my sweetheart anupriya. i didnt tell her on the first hand that it was a fiction. she started reading that tragic story.......i went to have my dinner, when came back......i found to scraps in my orkut scrapbook. that girl told me that she cried after reading my story........she thought that it was true. i felt satisfied at my literary talent. i can not become a saratchandra.....but somehow i was able to touch a person's heart. a reader cried after reading my story. that courageous girl who transformed a bandit to an author........culd not hold her heart and cried........i thanked my heart and thanked my ANUPRIYA for coming to my life and inspire me to write this story......
AND SOMEWHERE THAT DAY I RESEMBLED SARATCHANDRA.........NOT IN LITERARY QYALITY......BUT HIR GENIUS OF MAKING THE WOMEN CRY AFTER READING HIS STORIES......IS NOT THAT SATISFYING???????
